Ballyknockan Ruins, Wicklow Mountains

For 170 years a community of quarrymen and stonecutters provided granite for many of Dublin’s best known churches, public offices and other buildings. Not only was the granite stone extracted from the ground and shaped for use, it was often elaborately carved into architectural features before it left the quarry. Over time, odd skilfully carved features destined for far off locations have, for one reason or another, remained abandoned at the village.
